The Synoptic Arctic Survey (SAS) – International Planning and Coordination Workshop

There will be an open coordination and planning workshop to continue planning the Synoptic Arctic Survey (SAS) project on May 15-16, 2019 at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA. The SAS is a developing international program envisioned to mount a coordinated, multi-nation, oceanographic field based effort on a Pan Arctic scale over two summer seasons (2020-2021). The key objective is to achieve a quasi-synoptic baseline understanding of the fundamental structure and function of the linked Arctic carbon-ecosystem-physical systems that will permit detection of ongoing and future changes. The goals of the workshop include planning coordinated field sampling, international data sharing, education including graduate student participation, post field-season data synthesis, public outreach, and involvement of indigenous communities and identifying additional measurements (e.g., atmospheric measurements) or approaches (e.g., modeling) that would contribute to accomplishing the goals of the SAS. The SAS is a ground-up effort and wide participation, of all scientific career stages, including graduate students, are welcome, as is the participation of science managers across multiple disciplines and representatives of indigenous communities and organizations.
The participation of early career scientists is particularly encouraged. Limited travel support is available for early career scientists, both from US and international sources to participate in the workshop. Early career scientists here are defined as post-doctoral investigators, untenured, or tenure-track equivalent individuals within 5 years of their initial appointment. To apply for support, individuals should send a short 2-3 page CV and a brief statement of how their research interests align with the SAS scientific questions to cashjian@whoi.edu by April 15. The applications will be evaluated by the US SAS steering committee and decisions made as soon as possible after the deadline to expedite travel planning.
