- In the document "An integrated European Union policy for the Arctic" from 2016, the European Commission describes its support to SAON: “Finally, the EU contributes through Horizon 2020 to pan-Arctic observing initiatives such as those promoted by the Arctic Council with SAON or the GEO Cold Region Initiative, with the view of preparing through research the establishment of operational long-standing systems.”
- In 2008, the Eighth Conference of Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region encouraged national governments, the Arctic Council and institutions of EU to implement the SAON recommendations
- In it's communication "THE EUROPEAN UNION AND THE ARCTIC REGION" from 2008 the European Commission states that the EU should contribute to support the establishment of the Sustained Arctic Observing Network (page 6)
